On December 17th Council will have our first look at the proposed capital budget in the Council Chambers starting at 3:30 p.m. The capital budget is generally the most active piece of our 2020 budget as it includes things such as building repair and upgrades, road upgrades and the acquisition of new equipment.
The upcoming budget presentation is part of a budget process which include a combination of Council reviews and feedback as well as solicitation for feedback from residents. Municipalities are mandated to have a budget fully set by well into the new year however the earlier that budget is set, the sooner work can begin. The public are not permitted to present or comment at the December 17th meeting however they will have an opportunity at a later date to provide input and requests.
In many municipalities, Council directs staff to present a budget that is within a certain threshold such as no increase or a percentage allowable increase for operating and capital. In Douro Dummer, our Council relies on staff to present an initial list of possible expenditures and from that we debate what items should or should not be in the budget; keeping in mind the overall impact on ratepayers.
Once available, I will post the draft budget on my website but people can also visit the Township website to get updates and information.
